Days grow short, winds blow crisp
A summertime I’ll remember
Waning sun brings softer light
Dusk calls to the approaching night
I listen for the silent songs
Of the Shadows of September
Like families that reunite
The shadows hug the autumn splendor
They come and go, rise and fall
Their secret voice fills nature’s music hall
And I hear the silent songs
Of the Shadows of September
There is magic in those shadows
They cast a spell that sets me free
Oh please tell me you can hear them
Or do they only sing for me?
They show me scenes in fleeting dreams
Where I hear her voice so soft and tender
Daydream nights in warm embrace
In my sleep I awake to her smiling face
Then we dance to the silent songs
Of the Shadows of September
There is magic in those shadows
They can chase away the old ennui
Oh please tell me you can hear them
Or do they only sing to me?
Grateful for their company
Sometimes they stay until November
They’ll always be my welcome friends
I know next year they will return again
And they’ll sing their silent songs
